Colonization
By the 17th century, outside powers sought control of Taiwan. This lesson will examine the empires who laid claim to Taiwan throughout the past centuries.
Modern Taiwan
Taiwan’s modern-day transformation began in earnest after World War II. The island experienced political upheaval and martial law that lasted for nearly 40 years. However, Taiwan also underwent major economic reforms in agriculture, industry, technology, and business and many social liberalizations, as well, which has led to great wealth and modernization for the island, known as the “Taiwan Miracle.”
Modern Taipei
As the capital of Taiwan, Taipei sits at the center of its political, economic, and social landscape. More than two million of Taiwan’s total population of 23 million people live in Taipei, making for a vibrant, dynamic, and diverse capital city.
